We had just enough time on our drive from Los Angeles to New York to do one hike in Glacier National Park. We decided on the Avalanche Lake Trail and we did not regret it. It surpassed my expectations.

Great start to a morning hike out in glacier national park. The hike up to Grinnell glacier started with a fantastic view of the continental divid and one of the iconic GNP boat co boats, Morning Eagle.

Our plan was to stay at each of the classic lodges in Glacier Park. Our second stop was at the Many Glacier Hotel on Swiftcurrent Lake. Every view is gorgeous but timing is important if you want a good reflection. I rose early before the first hiker’s boat left the dock to transport adventurers across the lake to hit the trails. While the water was still calm I caught this view toward Grinnell Point. While these amazing lodges are national treasures that draw the thousands, it’s special to capture these nature photos without the evidence of other travelers.

After being up late and hiking all day we were seriously considering not even visiting Hidden Lake. Thankfully we found some motivation and got up early because we found the calmest lake I’ve ever seen.

My husband and I were exploring the trail to Hidden Lake in West Glacier, when we spotted a ridge line to our right. We knew it was the perfect spot to wander off the beaten path. We scaled up steep loose rock, boulders tumbling beneath our feet, and followed the mountain’s curves up a more solid incline until we came to a giant rock. It was the mountain’s vertical boundary for us, since crampons were needed to scale any further up into the slick summer glacier slush. Sensing the perfect photo op, my husband hopped up on the rock, dark cliffs looming behind him and this view in front of him.

The most beautiful sight I have ever seen after the hardest hike I have ever done. Remote spot in the heart of Glacier National Park.
